Nawal Sfendla: Scaling New Heights One Summit at a Time

The Ascent Begins
Nawal Sfendla, a 33-year-old Moroccan adventurer hailing from Casablanca, has set herself a unique mission: to conquer the world’s highest peaks. Her love for mountaineering was sparked on the highest peak in North Africa, Toubkal, which eventually led her to embark on the “7 Summits Challenge,” a pursuit that pushes her to accomplish extraordinary feats in some of the world’s most secluded regions.
Sfendla has triumphed over some of the world’s most formidable peaks, successfully scaling Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Aconcagua in Argentina, Elbruz in Russia, and Denali in Alaska. Each ascent has demanded unwavering determination and immense courage to confront harsh conditions and dizzying altitudes.
The Journey to Everest
In 2022, Sfendla journeyed to Nepal to prepare for her next significant challenge, Everest, which is scheduled for 2024. However, unpredictable weather forced her to call off her expedition at 7,300 meters on the glaciers of Manaslu, a peak that stands at 8,163 meters. This was a setback but certainly not a failure for this fearless climber.
A Return Home and a Resurgence
In 2016, Sfendla returned to Morocco and, three years later, made the bold decision to leave her corporate career to pursue mountaineering full-time. Back in Morocco, she ramped up her physical and mental training and decided to attempt Manaslu again in 2023. From September 5 to 23, 2023, Sfendla scaled Manaslu’s true summit, pulling off a historic feat. At 7:28 am on Saturday, September 23, 2023, she proudly hoisted the Moroccan flag at the summit, becoming the first Moroccan woman to reach this altitude. This success was a heartfelt tribute to the victims of an earthquake that struck Morocco during her ascent.
Three Peaks to Conquer
Three peaks remain for Sfendla to complete her 7 Summits Challenge, including the formidable Everest. She is actively seeking sponsors to aid in this audacious quest, demonstrating that determination and perseverance can conquer the highest peaks.
More Than a Mountaineer
Sfendla’s story extends beyond her mountaineering exploits. After earning her baccalaureate at Lyautey High School in Casablanca, she pursued her studies in France, earning a degree in Information and Communication in Rennes. She then completed her Master’s in Paris, specializing in media and entrepreneurship. For several years, she worked as a digital manager within a communication agency.
Nawal Sfendla is more than a conqueror of peaks; she is an inspiration to all those dreaming of pushing their own limits, whether physical or professional. Her determination and dedication make her a true adventure icon, a modern-day explorer charting her course in the world’s heights, while maintaining a deep attachment to her homeland, Morocco.
