Depp’s Second Directorial Venture ‘Modi’
Johnny Depp, known for his roles in “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Edward Scissorhands,” and numerous other iconic movies, has embarked on his second directorial venture. The project, a biographical film titled ‘Modi,’ chronicles the life of the renowned Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani. Filming is currently underway in Budapest, Hungary. The film marks Depp’s return to the director’s chair 25 years after his directorial debut with “The Brave” in 1997.
Luisa Ranieri Cast as Rosalie Tobia
Italian actress Luisa Ranieri, known for her recent role in Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-nominated drama “The Hand of God,” is the latest addition to the film’s star-studded cast. Ranieri will portray Rosalie Tobia, a café owner in Paris who played a crucial role in supporting and nurturing Modigliani during his difficult times.
Star-studded Cast and Crew
The film also stars Riccardo Scamarcio as Amadeo Modigliani, Al Pacino as art collector Maurice Gangnat, and other notable actors such as Stephen Graham, Bruno Gouery, Ryan McParland, Benjamin Lavernhe, and Sally Phillips. The production team includes industry heavyweights like Nicola Pecorini as Director of Photography, Dave Warren as Production Designer, and Penny Rose as Costume Designer.
‘Modi’: A Glimpse into Modigliani’s Life in Paris
The biopic is set during Modigliani’s stay in Paris during World War One. It is described as a snapshot of the artist’s life, focusing on the most turbulent and eventful 48 hours when Modigliani was on the run from the police through the war-torn streets of Paris. The narrative takes an interesting turn when Modigliani crosses paths with art collector Maurice Gangnat, a meeting that promises to change his life.
Budapest Doubles Up for Parisian Streets
The filming is taking place in the streets around Budapest’s Károlyi Garden, which are being transformed into the streets of the French capital in the 1910s. Additional filming locations include the city’s Buda Castle. The sets have been meticulously designed to replicate the ambience and architecture of Paris during the early 20th century, providing an authentic backdrop to this period drama.
Depp’s Return to Directing
‘Modi’ marks Johnny Depp’s much-anticipated return to directing after a hiatus of over two decades. With a compelling narrative and a stellar ensemble, the biopic promises to offer an intimate look at Amadeo Modigliani’s life and struggles. With Depp at the helm, the film is expected to bring a unique perspective to the artist’s story, making it a highly anticipated release for art enthusiasts and movie lovers alike.
