Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards recently discussed his journey towards a “cleaner” lifestyle, shedding light on his decision to quit various substances such as drugs and cigarettes. Richards, known for his rock and roll lifestyle, surprised fans with his shift towards sobriety, describing it as a “unique experience”. He quit smoking in 2019, heroin in 1978, and cocaine in 2006. Although he occasionally enjoys a drink, the famed guitarist is embracing a healthier lifestyle.
At the age of 79, Richards expressed gratitude for his health and age, revealing that he has, so far, not encountered any significant issues with aging. He acknowledges the potential challenges that the future might hold, but remains optimistic. Speaking candidly about his views on longevity, he stated, “I’m blessed maybe that physically this thing just keeps going. So far I have no real problem with getting old. There are some horrific things that you can see in the future, but you’ve got to get there. I’m getting along with the idea of being 80 and still walking, still talking. I find aging a fascinating process. But then if you didn’t, you might as well commit suicide.”
Apart from discussing his lifestyle changes, Richards also delved into his ongoing professional matters. The Rolling Stones recently announced their upcoming 24th album, “Hackney Diamonds”. Set to release on October 20th, the album promises to be a treat for music lovers, featuring collaborations with numerous iconic musicians, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Lady Gaga.
Speaking about the album, Richards expressed his enthusiasm, noting the urgency and energy that went into the album’s creation. He stated, “I’ve never ever not had fun recording, but this one had real urgency and energy. We blitzkrieged that thing.”
Richards also shared his thoughts on the current music scene. The guitarist admitted his aversion towards rap music and the lack of “feel” in today’s pop music. He expressed his preference for music created by people playing instruments, criticizing the synthesized music that dominates the industry today.
In summary, Keith Richards is navigating a cleaner lifestyle after quitting drugs and cigarettes. His journey towards sobriety offers a unique perspective on the rockstar’s life, demonstrating that change is always possible, irrespective of one’s past choices. With a new album on the horizon and a healthier lifestyle, Richards continues to remain an active force in the world of music. Despite potential challenges that come with aging, the legendary guitarist embraces his journey with optimism, exemplifying a positive outlook on life changes.
