From Rivals to Renowned Illustrators: The Story of Tomski Polanski

The Birth of a Unique Collaboration
In the realm of illustration, it isn’t often that competitors become collaborators. But for Czech illustrators Lukas Tomek and Ilona Polanska, this is precisely what happened. The duo, who met as rivals in an illustration competition, joined forces to develop a unique illustration style that has since gained international recognition. Operating under the studio name “Tomski Polanski,” Tomek and Polanska have carved a niche for themselves with their unique storytelling through illustration.
Developing a Distinctive Style
Both Tomek and Polanska are avid cyclists, and their passion for cycling often seeps into their work, providing a unique theme that distinguishes them in the art world. However, their style isn’t confined to one subject or theme. They believe in maintaining a cohesive style that evolves over time, enabling them to explore various themes and techniques. This adaptability has allowed them to work more efficiently, with each taking turns developing and completing projects.
A Creative Approach to Attracting Clients
In the early stages of their collaboration, Tomski and Polanski created a portfolio of dream projects, including imagined works like illustrated school notebooks and chocolate wrappers. This unique approach attracted a variety of clients, ranging from tech giant Google to local businesses like Pilsner Urquell and Hotel Almanac X Prague. Their work isn’t confined to commercial projects, though. They’ve also enriched literary publications with their illustrations and even created a monumental painting for Prague’s Emblem Hotel.
A Career-Defining Moment
Working on promotional materials for the Oscar-winning film “Grand Budapest Hotel” in 2015 marked a significant turning point in Tomski Polanski’s career. The production studio approached them based on their portfolio, demonstrating the power of their unique style and the international recognition they had achieved.
Diversifying Their Portfolio
Apart from their commissioned work, Tomski and Polanski also operate an online Illustrationshop and a physical showroom in Prague, where they sell their illustrations. Their popular items include posters and T-shirts featuring significant personalities, as well as relaxed motives with animals. They also accept a limited number of custom orders each year, dedicating the quieter months of January to March to these special projects.
The Journey from Rivals to Collaborators
The journey of Lukas Tomek and Ilona Polanska is a testament to the power of collaboration. From being competitors in an illustration competition to becoming successful collaborators, their journey is an inspiration for young artists and illustrators. With their unique style and wide client base, Tomski Polanski has become a recognized name in the world of illustration. Their story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best partnerships arise from the unlikeliest of circumstances.
