Farewell to a Master: Colombia Honors Fernando Botero

Return of the Renowned Artist

The body of globally celebrated artist Fernando Botero arrived in Colombia on Thursday, September 21, but only reached his hometown of Medellín on the evening of Monday, September 25, from Bogotá. His final farewell was meticulously planned through the collective efforts of the Antioquia Museum, the Government of Antioquia, and the Institute of Culture and Heritage. These three entities have orchestrated a series of events spanning from Tuesday, September 26 to Thursday, September 28, providing an opportunity for locals and visitors to pay their respects to the master artist.

Homage Begins at Antioquia Museum

The tributes commenced on Tuesday, September 26, when Botero’s body arrived at the Antioquia Museum around 8:30 in the morning. A series of tributes were conducted by the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra and the Public Force. Subsequently, his body was shifted to the Museum’s Council Hall for a lying in state from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, with free admission for all.

Continued Tributes and Public Viewing

On Wednesday, September 27, Botero’s body continued to lie in state from nine in the morning until five in the evening. This viewing was also open to the public free of charge. In addition, the Symphony Orchestra and the Eafit Philharmonic Orchestra, among other entities, continued to pay their respects through tribute performances.

The unfortunate demise of the renowned artist Fernando Botero has incited a series of tribute events in Colombia.
