The Indian film “2018-Everyone is a Hero,” a multi-actor survival drama centered on climate change, has been selected as India’s official entry to the 2024 Academy Awards. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI), with its chairman emphasizing the film’s topical theme – climate change and the societal challenges that people face in the quest for development.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, the film features actors Tovino Thomas and Kunchako Boban. It is based on the catastrophic floods that unfolded in Kerala in 2018. The cast also includes Tanvi Ram and Aparna Balamurali.

Selection from 22 Films

“2018-Everyone is a Hero” was chosen from 22 films. Some of the other contenders included “The Kerala Story,” “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway,” “Balagam,” “Vaalvi,” “Baaplyok,” and “August 16, 1947.”

The selection was made by a 16-member committee led by the chairman of FFI, a renowned filmmaker. The committee screened various films before settling on the Malayalam movie for its relevant exploration of the impact of climate change and societal development on ordinary individuals.

The Film Federation of India conducted a rigorous selection process to choose India’s submission for the 2024 Oscars. A 16-member committee led by the chairman of FFI screened various films, including “The Kerala Story,” “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway,” “Balagam,” “Vaalvi,” “Baaplyok,” and “August 16, 1947.” After careful consideration, the Malayalam film “2018-Everyone is a Hero” emerged as the deserving choice.
